Demulcent
A soothing, usually mucilaginous or oily substance used especially to relieve pain in inflamed or irritated mucous membranes. It also protects mucous membrane from further irritation. It has a direct action on the lining of the intestines, soothing and reducing irritation by direct contact. Demulcents used on skin are known as emollients.
Herbs are taken in the form of syrup, lozenges and decoction. Demulcent reduce irritation in intestine, reduce sensitivity of the digestive system to gastric juices, help to ease the digestive spasm which cause colic and relax painful spasm in the bladder and urinary system.
